Sam Ryder Expresses Desire for The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” to Top Christmas Charts
Eurovision star Sam Ryder has shared that he would “love” for The Pogues‘ classic track “Fairytale of New York” to secure this year’s Christmas Number One spot, acknowledging the sentimental significance of the song following the recent passing of Shane MacGowan.
Ryder, who is in the race for the Christmas Number One with his single ‘You’re Christmas to Me,’ expressed his admiration for ‘Fairytale of New York’ and its historic impact. The Pogues’ festive anthem, featuring the late Kirsty MacColl, has never claimed the top spot in the UK charts, and fans are rallying to achieve this in honor of Shane MacGowan, who passed away on November 30 at the age of 65.
In the current UK Singles Chart, “Fairytale of New York” has risen to Number Four, gaining momentum in the festive rankings. Ryder’s ‘You’re Christmas to Me,’ available exclusively on Amazon Music, currently holds the 12th position.
Ryder shared his perspective on the ‘Fairytale’ situation in an interview with the Daily Star, expressing a romantic view of the song’s tragic elements, including the loss of two iconic voices. He stated, “There’s a lot of tragedy wrapped up in that song – two gorgeous voices no longer with us and taken too soon.”
Victoria Mary Clarke, Shane MacGowan’s widow, has joined the campaign for ‘Fairytale of New York’ to top the charts, expressing her support and stating, “It should be the Christmas number one. It absolutely should.”
At Shane MacGowan’s funeral, a poignant rendition of ‘Fairytale of New York’ was performed by Glen Hansard, Lisa O’Neill, and members of The Pogues, creating a memorable moment for friends and family in attendance. LCD Soundsystem also paid tribute to the song in a recent performance.
