Billie Joe Armstrong Joins the Go-Go’s During Coachella
In one of Coachella 2025’s most electrifying and unexpected moments, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong made a surprise cameo during the Go-Go’s Saturday afternoon set. The Green Day‘s frontmen jumped on stage to perform one of the band’s 1984 classics, “Head Over Heels.”
The appearance came just hours before Green Day was set to headline the Saturday lineup. Making fans already anticipating the punk legends’ desert takeover. Armstrong, never one to shy away from a little rock ‘n’ roll mischief, had teased the collaboration earlier in the day via Green Day‘s Instagram, cryptically encouraging followers to “go see the Go-Go’s.”

When Armstrong finally came to the stage, the crowd roared with delight. His vocals melded with ease with the band’s pop-rock energy. Thus adding a new dimension to the high-octane hit that remains a staple of their catalog.
“Head over heels after playing with @officialgogos at @coachella,” Armstrong wrote later on Instagram, sharing a backstage photo alongside a carousel of images from the performance, including a peek at the official setlist. The Go-Go’s, clearly energized by the moment, responded in kind: “We had the time of our lives!” they posted, alongside a celebratory photo with Armstrong.
Coachella 2025 Line Ups
The cross-generational collaboration was a standout highlight during the first weekend of the annual Indio, California festival. Coachella this year runs April 11–13 and April 18–20. Saturday’s lineup was stacked with genre-spanning talent, including Charli XCX, Anitta, Clairo, ENHYPEN, Jimmy Eat World, T-Pain, and more. All of them leading up to Green Day’s much-anticipated headlining set.
Speaking to Billboard ahead of the festival, Armstrong underscored the enduring relevance of rock music in an ever-evolving cultural landscape. “Death, taxes, and… rock ‘n’ roll,” he said with a grin. “In this world gone sideways, we know one thing for certain—rock ‘n’ roll is forever, and its spirit is needed now more than ever. So bring your rage, your hope, and your loudest voice. Coachella, let’s have the time of our lives.”
Indeed, Armstrong’s surprise appearance proved that rock music is alive. Also, it has the power to unite generations, even under the blazing Coachella sun.
