Chappell Roan Jokes About a ‘Glee’ Christmas Episode, Then Offers a Playful Apology
Chappell Roan recently stirred some lighthearted controversy with her candid critique of Glee. The pop star took to Instagram on December 23 to share her thoughts on the show’s season 3 holiday episode, “Extraordinary Merry Christmas,” sparking reactions from devoted fans of the series.
In a video posted on an account co-managed by Roan and her creative director Ramisha Sattar, the 26-year-old humorously declared the 2011 episode “the worst episode of Glee I’ve ever seen.” Roan, barely suppressing a laugh, paused the episode mid-play and added, “I’m turning it off. I hate it. Next.”
Shortly after, Chappell Roan returned with a tongue-in-cheek apology video, seated in front of a glowing Christmas tree while someone off-camera humorously brandished a pair of scissors. “This is my apology video for the Gleeks that I offended. I am so sorry,” Roan joked. She lightened the tone further by professing her love for Glee and specific characters, including Kurt and Blaine, portrayed by Chris Colfer and Darren Criss.
Roan’s commentary isn’t her first interaction with Glee. Earlier this year, during a live performance, the rising star shared that she had only recently started watching the musical dramedy, which originally aired from 2009 to 2015. “It took me like three full times to try to watch Glee, ’cause I was like, ‘This is stupid as f—.’ And then I was like, ‘Lean into it,’” she told the audience, illustrating her journey from skeptic to casual viewer.
Despite the playful jabs at Glee, 2024 has been a stellar year for Roan. The singer-songwriter capped off the year as No. 1 on Billboard’s Top New Artists chart, cementing her breakout status in the music industry. Her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in August and produced seven Billboard Hot 100 entries, including her first top 10 hit, “Good Luck, Babe!” which peaked at No. 4.
Roan’s blend of humor, authenticity, and chart-topping success has endeared her to fans and solidified her place as one of the year’s most exciting new artists. While her Glee commentary may have ruffled a few feathers, it also showcased her relatable and unfiltered personality—one of the many reasons her star continues to rise.
