Djo Unveils New Single “Potion” Ahead of Upcoming Album ‘The Crux’
Joe Keery, the world-renowned face of Stranger Things, continues to write fresh songs with his music persona, Djo. On April 2, 2025, Djo released “Potion“, the third teaser of his highly anticipated album The Crux, which releases today, April 4. This single, driven by acoustic, brings out a new side of Keery’s music, distinct from his previous synth-infused trends.
“Potion” employs acoustic guitar, falsetto, and Mellotron to introduce a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. Keery explained the song is “like your favourite pair of blue jeans,” adding that its comforting yet agelessness is one of the things that makes it unique. Drawing influences from artists like Harry Nilsson and Lindsey Buckingham, Keery utilised Travis-picking tricks in composing the song. It becomes a natural, emotional-sounding song with an intimate feel but is universally relatable.
Unlike previous singles, such as “Delete Ya” and “Basic Being Basic”, which leaned into synth-pop elements, “Potion” highlights lush instrumentation reminiscent of ’60s and ’70s folk-pop. The song describes love and longing with lyrics that evoke the desire for connection and simplicity: “I’ll try for all of my life just to find someone who leaves on the light for me.”
The Crux is a significant evolution of the sound of Djo. Co-produced with Adam Thein and recorded at Electric Lady Studios, the album combines psych-pop with West Coast warmth. Djo started his world tour this week with sold-out North American shows, including headlining appearances at Coachella, Glastonbury, and Lollapalooza. He also headlines UK dates and opens for Noah Kahan on select European shows.
