Green Day Ignites Rebellion in Video for “Bobby Sox” from Latest Album Saviors

Green Day unleashes the rebellious spirit with the fiery video for their latest single, “Bobby Sox,” a standout track from their 14th studio album, Saviors, released today. The punk rock veterans have been teasing fans with singles like “Dilemma,” “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” and “Look Ma, No Brains!” leading up to the album drop.

In a recent interview, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong shed light on “Bobby Sox” and its exploration of gender fluidity, particularly in the context of the contemporary moral panic surrounding transgender issues, which Armstrong boldly labels as “f***ing close-minded.”

The lyrics of “Bobby Sox” delve into gender exploration, with Armstrong singing, “Do you want to be my best friend? / You can drive me crazy all over again / And I’ll bore you to death / Doesn’t matter when we are in love / You’re not just any type of girl / My one true love and you’re my world / Do you wanna be my girlfriend? / Do you wanna be my boyfriend?”

Armstrong reflects on the changing times, stating, “Nowadays it’s more common for kids to be LGBTQ, and there’s more support. But for us, back in the day,” referring to the late ’80s and early ’90s, “that was like the beginning of when people were able to openly say things like that.”

Addressing the current moral panic over transgender youths, Armstrong bluntly expresses, “I just think they’re f***ing close-minded. It’s like people are afraid of their children. Why would you be afraid? Why don’t you let your kid just be the kid that they are?”

As Saviors hits the airwaves, it not only serves as a bridge between the band’s iconic albums Dookie and American Idiot but also stands as a testament to Green Day’s enduring presence and unapologetic rebellion. The album’s artwork, characterized by defiance met with a shrug, echoes the sentiment: “We’re still here and we’re still f***ed.”

Green Day enthusiasts can look forward to a nostalgic treat as the band announced that they will play both Dookie and American Idiot in full during their 2024 Saviors world tour. Joining them on select dates are acclaimed acts like Nothing But Thieves, The Hives, Donots, The Interrupters, Maid Of Ace, The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas.
