Jon Bon Jovi Faces Uncertain Future as Singer: “I Want to Be Great, or Not Be At All”
Rock legend Jon Bon Jovi has cast a shadow over his future as a live performer, revealing a potentially career-ending struggle with his vocals.
In a candid interview with The Sunday Times, Bon Jovi admitted to potentially retiring from live shows if his voice can’t recapture its former glory. “If the singing isn’t great, if I can’t be the guy I once was… then I’m done,” he declared. “And I’m good with that.”
This revelation comes after Bon Jovi opened up about vocal cord surgery in 2022, leaving fans questioning his ability to tour again. The procedure, known as medialisation, addressed atrophy in one of his vocal cords.
While a new studio album, Forever, is slated for release in June, Bon Jovi acknowledges the stark difference between studio work and the demands of live shows. “There’s a big difference between being in a studio and going out on the road,” he explained. “We’ve got a new record, I do vocal therapy daily. But I want to deliver two and a half hour sets, night after night – and I know how good I can be. If I can’t be that guy… well, let’s just say I don’t have any interest in becoming a faded echo of myself.”
Forever is described as a return to joyful themes, a stark contrast to the band’s previous album, 2020, which grappled with heavy topics like the pandemic and social unrest. “We had to wade through a lot of darkness to get to this point,” Bon Jovi admitted to Ultimate Classic Rock.
Fans can expect a deeper look into the band’s journey with the upcoming four-part documentary series Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. Set to premiere on Hulu (US) and Disney+ (UK) on April 26th, the series promises to be an unflinching exploration of the band’s legacy, “the whole truth, warts and all, the struggles that shaped who we are today.”
Whether Bon Jovi takes the stage again remains to be seen. One thing is clear: he prioritizes delivering a powerful live experience, and if his voice can’t meet that standard, he’s prepared to walk away.
