Lola Young Reveals A New Release Called “One Thing”
Lola Young, the rising British singer-songwriter, has returned with “One Thing.” It becomes her first release since her unapologetic sophomore album This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway dropped last August — and it’s a bold, sensual step forward.
Built over a nostalgic boom-bap beat, “One Thing” finds Young showcasing her sexuality with unfiltered confidence. “I wanna show you just what I like.” She is bold, hard, and just Lola. Thus, she definitely shows a sharp lyricist without a sugarcoat.
The track, which arrives following a wave of teaser clips, is from California. It follows Young’s buzz-worthy Coachella performance this spring. Directed by the legendary Dave Meyers, the accompanying video brings her vision to life with cinematic flair.
“I wanted to make a song and music video that is thought-provoking and highlights sex being both a fun and light thing, not always meaningful,” she said in a statement. “As well as showing how gender roles can be reversed.” It continues the South London artist’s signature approach — pushing boundaries while keeping it grounded and real.
Lola Young and Move to Fame
Young’s been on a serious run. Her breakout single “Messy” stunned the industry earlier this year. It quietly climbed to the top of the Official UK Singles Chart a full eight months after its release. It spent four weeks at No. 1. Thus, making her the longest-reigning British female solo artist at the summit since Adele’s “Easy on Me.” The track’s raw introspection and catchy hook have racked up over 600 million Spotify streams, striking a chord with listeners worldwide.
Collaborations with Tyler, the Creator, and Lil Yachty have only widened her scope. She masterfully blended her smoky vocals with genre-hopping production. Young also snagged three Ivor Novello nominations and a BRIT nod for Best Pop Act this past March. Thus, the collaborations solidified her place in the upper echelon of UK pop talent.
Despite the accolades, Young remains rooted in her truth. “I’m not about the glitz and the glam — I don’t scream ‘Hollywood,'” she told Billboard UK in a candid interview last fall. “I used to want to fit into this Westernized beauty ideal — but now, I give you realness. I swear a lot. I have fun. I’ve got my belly out. That’s what people connect with.”
With festival dates lined up across Europe, including Reading & Leeds in
August and a stateside set at NYC’s All Things Go in September alongside Doechii and Noah Kahan — it’s clear that Young’s moment isn’t just coming. The track is already here. And with “One Thing,” she’s reminding us: this isn’t about perfection but power.
