Trey Anastasio’s Journey from Addiction to Hope: Opening Divided Sky Recovery Center
Phish‘s frontman Trey Anastasio, who has been sober for 17 years, launched a residential recovery center called Divided Sky in Ludlow, Vermont, in late 2023. This initiative was a way to give back, teaming up with the caseworker who supported him following his 2006 heroin possession and DWI arrest. The 46-bed facility offers a nonclinical, abstinence-based program aligned with the 12-step approach, costing $7,500 for a 30-day stay, with financial assistance available for those in need.
Anastasio’s own journey into addiction began with OxyContin after dental surgery in 2000, leading to significant personal and professional losses, including a temporary split from Phish. His 2006 arrest marked a turning point, after which he entered a drug court program, avoiding jail time and achieving long-term sobriety. The program director at Divided Sky, Melanie Gulde, was pivotal in his recovery, and Anastasio credits her with saving his life.
Through Divided Sky, which was funded in part by Anastasio’s “Beacon Jams” shows in New York, Anastasio and Gulde aim to offer hope and support to others battling addiction, emphasizing the resilience of humans and the transformative power of recovery. As Phish continues to tour and release music, Anastasio remains a symbol of hope for many in the recovery community.
